How do I become a member of YLSS?
Applications for the next class will be available on this site in January. To be eligible for the class, you must be a rising sophomore or junior.
How much time will this take?
Mandatory program activities include an evening kick-off and Saturday retreat in August, six week-day programs, two Sunday afternoon skills workshops and a Sunday afternoon closing retreat. You must be able to miss school for the six program days in Septemeber, October, November, February, March and April. As part of the application process, your school principal will need to agree that you may miss school.
When will YLSS meet?
To avoid students missing the same classes each month, YLSS varies the days of the week that we meet. You will get a calendar of all our meeting dates and times at the Opening Kick-Off in August.
Is there an attendance policy?
Yes, all class members are asked to sign an attendance contract and pledge to attend all planned events. We realize emergencies arise and have outlined attendance standards in the contract.
Is there a dress code?
Because we meet with business, government and community leaders, the dress is business casual for program days. Jeans and T-shirts are acceptable for retreats, service project days, and Sunday workshops.
What is the cost to participate?
Are there any requirements?
All YLSS students must provide their own transportation to and from all events. Also, students must have an email that they check regularly since all communications will be by email. A cell phone with the ability to send and receive text messages is helpful.
